I am sad today. I am sad for the digital marketing industry. Here is why:

Currently exemplified by the Isobar rampage that is going on at the moment - Glue are getting dicked senseless. Anorak got minced. Decon seemed to be victim to a scorched earth policy with pretty much the entire combined creative team disappearing within months of the merger. They’re all moving to Regents St offices in to a massive multi-floor agency Borg cube that no doubt will drive efficiency and eradicate all remaining traces of evil, accountant-unfriendly, unquantifiable creativity. I heard there were discussions about recreating the Owl & Pussycat’s facade in the new office? What. The. Fuck. Come on guys, quit dry humping the tattered corpse of these once great agencies and resign yourself to becoming Publicis.

Augmented Reality is very much a buzzword, indeed it’s such a buzzword it’s already fading in to the commonplace (there’s been enough QR code / webcam games now and we’ve certainly done our share (RubberDuckzilla).

It’s something that seems very likely to me to develop rapidly, because there’s a clear direction with both technologies that compliment it (mobile computing, the ubiquity of wireless broadband, super cheap digital cameras, plus we’re finally getting closer to tech that gets a little closer to your eyes and brain). AR (or “Mediated Reality as Vernor Vinge put it) was something I read about a while back in Rainbow’s End (not the greatest book of his, but very vivid), but I’ve not seen anything that gets that close.

Then I spotted this student piece via Kester - Augmented (hyper)Reality. I think this (sadly) gets a lot right. I ask myself “What will my kids do that freaks me out” and I think the answer is “Find living in this utterly natural”.
